From the reviews
I originally came to Ryu Shu Kan because it was the only place on Long Island where you can experience Kendo (Samurai Swordsmanship). After many months of following Kendo there, I realized that there was something more which kept me coming back.
17 years ago I entered into the Ryu Shu Kan dojo with my then 7 year old son. Since then 2 other sons, my wife and myself (now a 5th degree black belt) have all studied at this school. The philosophy behind the art of true helping hands and life protection arts are second too none.
RYU SHU KAN HAS BEEN A GREAT EXPERIENCE FOR MY CHILDREN. MY OLDER DAUGHTER STARTED THERE THREE YEARS AGO TO HELP HER SOME BEHAVOIR ISSUES, SINCE THEN SHE HAS LEARNED NOT ONLY SELF DEFENSE BUT RESPECT, SELF WORTH, PATIENCE AND HONOR.
I started going to Ryu Shu Kan in 2005 when I was looking for a cardio kickboxing workout. The classes are small and Kyoshi Gerry and his wife Hiroko give personal attention. I have lost the flab around my waist and gained muscle tone. I'm a grandma now and I feel better and have more energy than I did ten years ago.
Your first judo class at Ryu Shu Kan Karate Kendo Judo Martial Arts Center Sachem Farmingville
Nervous about walking into a judo dojo for the first time? Almost everyone is, and good sensei expect beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, learning to fall safely (ukemi), then drilling a throw or two and some groundwork with a partner — not hard randori. Rest whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a judogi if you have one); you'll train barefoot on the mats. What to bring: water and a mouthguard if you have one — many dojos lend a loaner judogi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own judogi. Live randori eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the sensei. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.
