From the reviews

I've been under Dr. Ferguson for over 11 years now. During my first two years of Judo, I had never won a gold medal in a Judo tournament. After meeting Dr. Ferguson, that quickly changed. I gave Dr. Ferguson my first gold medal in a Judo tournament and he still has it to this day. Moreover, Dr.

What an honor it is to be part of Dr Ferguson’s Judo class. While looking for an extra curricular activity for my now 5 year old ( she started at 3) we landed the perfect place for her to not only learn Judo but gain confidence, character building and most importantly; how to fail and get back up!

★★★★★ — Patricia, Mar 2021

Wow, the level of instruction at this gym is high as ever, looking at the credentials of the head instructor, Dr. Rhadi Ferguson, and you’ll see why. Great coaching in detail of moves and ability of Dr. Ferguson to communicate is among the best I’ve seen. The students there are great too, especially the kids.

★★★★★ — Ben, Feb 2018

Dr. Ferguson and his family have been a part of our lives for years now. I still remember my children’s first day of Judo. They were so proud and excited. Even though they are a bit older now, they look back at Judo as a great experience. They love Dr.

Your first judo class at Tampa Florida Judo and Mixed Martial Arts

Nervous about walking into a judo dojo for the first time? Almost everyone is, and good sensei expect beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, learning to fall safely (ukemi), then drilling a throw or two and some groundwork with a partner — not hard randori. Rest whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a judogi if you have one); you'll train barefoot on the mats. What to bring: water and a mouthguard if you have one — many dojos lend a loaner judogi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own judogi. Live randori eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the sensei. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.

Judo is a contact sport. Ease in, tap early and often, listen to your sensei, and if you have any injuries or health concerns, mention them before class and check with a doctor if you're unsure.
