From the reviews
Great club. I've gotten more out of training here for a year than I did training for years at other martial arts places. They offer quality instruction in traditional Kodokan Judo rather than merely focusing on strategies for winning competitions.
I’ve been training here going on three years. The place is not much to look at, but the instructors are amazing, and we have a great little community. We recently competed at Indiana state judo championships earning bronze, silver, and gold medals.
Great club with many years of experience. The amount of direct training from black belts can’t be beat. Lots of throwing! Relaxed and friendly atmosphere is welcoming and speaks to quality of the club following one of the tenants of Judo, “mutual benefit and welfare.”
Best Traditional style judo training is what you want, this is the place to be at. He will teach you so much in one class than you will learn elsewhere. I love the training ideology, in-depth technique analysis and it training according to the kodokan principles.
Your first judo class at Virgil's Judo Club
Nervous about walking into a judo dojo for the first time? Almost everyone is, and good sensei expect beginners to come through the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: a typical first class is a warm-up, learning to fall safely (ukemi), then drilling a throw or two and some groundwork with a partner — not hard randori. Rest whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: athletic wear you can move in (or a judogi if you have one); you'll train barefoot on the mats. What to bring: water and a mouthguard if you have one — many dojos lend a loaner judogi for a first class, so it's worth asking when you call. As you keep training you'll add your own judogi. Live randori eases in gradually, once your fundamentals are solid. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign a waiver and meet the sensei. It gets easier fast — most people feel far more at home by their third class.
